Obesity is a global problem that has had a serious impact on the health of many people around the world. Recently, scientists have discovered that the gut microbiome has a significant influence on human obesity. The objective of this article is to synthesize and examine the existing state of research, evolving trends, and critical problems related to the relationship between gut microbiota and obesity. This review summarizes the intestinal flora species that have an impact on obesity discovered in recent studies, the metabolic products of the intestinal flora that have a direct impact on obesity and their mechanisms of action, the therapies for modifying the intestinal flora based on synthetic biology for the treatment of obesity, their limitations, and prospects.
